Writing Tip 44: How to write your book summary/blurb

What is a blurb and why is it necessary.

A blurb is a short description of a book that is written for promotional purposes. This is generally written by the author or a publisher (if you’re traditionally published) and it is located on the back of the book.

It is generally between 150-200 words and anything more than that is way too much information and anything less than that is too little for potential readers to know about your book.

If you’re self-publishing and are not going to print softcover or hardcover copies of your book and will only be available as an ebook the blurb will be placed in the description section of whatever platform you choose to distribute your ebook (Amazon, iBooks, Ingram Spark, etc.).

I don’t know if you’re like me but I have a good grasp on my story but to condense the entire story into 150-200 words is challenging. But I found this awesome website http://www.artplusmarketing.com. That helped me with writing my blurb. However, the title of the article is sort of misleading as it says nothing about the blurb itself instead it guides you to on how to write loglines and taglines.

I will explain loglines and taglines on another post so for now just bear with me.

In order to write a blurb for your book, you should at least have a rough draft of your story. Basically, you should have already written your book and have a clear beginning middle and end for the most part. Either before or after self-editing. The blurb content can change if after you edit your rough draft you made significant changes to your manuscript/rough draft which changed its location, people involved, or plot.

Without further ado see below for a great way to help you write your blurb. Disclaimer: This is a basic questionnaire but there are other forums and sites that have intricate information. But I found this simple enough for me to use.

Use these questions to plug the information from your story to create a blurb. You will have to be creative to combine everything into a cohesive readable blurb. Enjoy.

  1. Who is your main character?
  2. Where does the story take place?
  3. What is the situation?
  4. Why does it matter?
  5. How does the character solve the problem?

The author of the article Shaunta Grimes used the questionnaire using The Wizard of Oz the original version as an example. However, I used my book The Scarlet Romance as a guide.

1. WHO is your main character? AIDONEUS, THE WATCHERS, ENOS, VESTA

2.WHERE does the story take place? OLYMPUS and UNDERWORLD

3. WHAT is the situation? AIDONEUS HAS LOST CONTROL OF HIS LIFE AND THE WATCHERS -HIS GUARDIANS- ARE TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THIS. HE MUST FULFILL HIS LEGACY OR CHOOSE LOVE.

4. WHY does it matter? VESTA KNOWS A PIECE OF INFORMATION TO HELP AIDONEUS. BUT THE WATCHERS KNOWING THE TRUTH WANTS TO KEEP EVERYONE IN THE DARK SO THEY HAVE THREATENED HER TO DEATH. IN ORDER TO SAVE THE GODS HE MUST SURPASS HIS GRIEF AND GO AGAINST HIS GUARDIANS.

5. HOW does the character solve the problem? ON A QUEST TO UNCOVER HIS TRUTH HE MUST ENLIST THE HELP OF HIS ENEMY -THE TITANS.

Got it? Now let’s put it all together.

Two things Aidoneus the god of the Underworld was convinced of:

One, he will gain control of his life, and

Two, he will not let his second chance at love slip through his grasp again.

He will have to go against the Watchers -his guardians- to get his independence but it will come at a cost. His sister Vesta holds the pieces to uncover the family secret, but she’s been threatened by the Watchers.

In a desperate need to discover his truth Aidoneus travels with his brother Enos to find answers. He learns more than what he was expecting but left with unanswered questions that only his sister can explain.

Upon his return, his quest to fulfill his legacy or choose love has him in turmoil.

What he chooses shocks everyone including himself.

Aidoneus then found himself in the middle of a love war.  He must enlist the help of the Titan -the enemies- that killed his love Persephone to bring peace.

Will he be able to surpass his grief? or Will the Titans try to kill him too?

See? That long sentence gives us an idea of who the main character is, what happened to them, and why it matters. Now you I try to put everything together with your story and let me know in the comments how it went.
